Homer Heals the Heart

If you're recovering from a heart attack, declaiming The Illiad could do you a power of good, says and European study. Sometimes our breathing and heart-beats synchronize, leading to physiological changes that seem to help cardiac patients recover. The study has shown that reading aloud the poetic form known as hexameter, found in classical epic poetry, induces a rate of six breaths a minute, which seems ideal for this synchronization.
